The ancient Romans believed that the gem was a solid form of actual moonlight! Along with the ancient Greeks, they dedicated the stone to their moon goddess. 

Moonstone is a sodium potassium aluminium silicate  of the feldspar group that displays a pearly and opalescent schiller. An alternative name for moonstone is hecatolite (from goddess Hecate).
